For American citizens who want to re-enter the U.S., but don't want the hassle of going through the long security lines, there is a better way. The U.S. Government has a number of trusted traveler programs that are designed to identify travelers who have been pre-screened. These travelers can avoid the regular security lineups in airports and other ports of entry and this means that security staff can focus on the higher risk passengers.
For U.S. and Canadian citizens and permanent residents crossing the U.S. border can enroll in the NEXUS program. For those crossing the Mexican/U.S. Border by car, there is a program called the SENTRI program, which is designed to shorten the wait at the border crossing by allowing program members to enter into special lineups that move more quickly. For those traveling into the U.S. by plane, there is the Global Entry Program, which will ensure that members can pass through special lineups or kiosks that will allow them to avoid the traditional security checks. All programs require the traveler to fill out an application, each of which have different criteria for membership.
