Lego Man for Takeoff!
Sunday, 29 January 2012
Two teens from Toronto sent a lego man into space using a weather balloon, a camera, and a mobile phone. The teens had heard of similar things done in the past and figured they could do it too. The filled a weather balloon with helium and made a styrofoam box to hold the camera and mobile phone. Then they attached a man made of lego holding a Canadian flag to the box. He went for the ride of his life.

One of the teens, Matthew Ho (17), said that they researched the safe and proper use of weather balloons before the launch. A spokesperson from the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA) commended the boys on their resourcefulness. However, chairman for the flight safety division for ACPA, Captain Barry Wiszniowski, said that their only major concern is the lack of notification. Weather balloons are generally launched from known locations so that pilots are aware of their potential presence in the air. Mr. Ho says that anyone planning to attempt the same thing should notify the authorities first.
