Less Then Glamorous Travel Jobs

Airline Pilot Some travel related jobs can be appealing -- positions like jumbo jet captain or concierge at a major hotel carry a certain panache. Others can be, well others can be downright strange or even objectionable. Travel and Leisure magazine has rounded up a few examples of weird travel jobs that you probably have never heard of. Here's a brief sampling:

Falconer
At Santa Barbara’s Biltmore Four Seasons, a falconer comes twice a week to shoo seagulls from the pool at the resort’s new Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club. The resort stresses this is a nonviolent way to intimidate the seagulls, who otherwise leave droppings or dive-bomb for guests’ poolside snacks.

Coconut Safety Engineer
At the Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Coconut Safety Engineer (CSE) has a steady job because a few studies have found that falling coconuts, can inflict massive head injuries, or even kill people beneath them. While some resorts at least post signs warning guests not to sit under the trees, the Ritz-Carlton isn't taking any chances.

Sewer Guide
Le Musée des Ègouts (the Museum of the Sewers) has been a runaway hit in Paris since it first opened to smell-tolerant visitors in the 19th century. Today’s guides are often ex-sewer workers, so they presumably have developed a threshold for the potential aromatic hazards of the job.

Manners Police
Uncouth tourists in Venice, Italy who, according to city officials, traipse around shirtless, sit down in the middle of sidewalks, and dare to eat sandwiches there are considered a danger to ongoing tourism. Since last summer, "volunteer angels" have been on patrol to intervene in any flagrant acts. The volunteer "angels" are reportedly made up of about 50 locals, mostly women who range in age from 20 to 60. Some are multilingual. They'll give offenders a friendly warning, but can also flag a traffic cop to fine offenders.
