The Marriott is going green! The Courtyard Charleston/Summerville in North Carolina will be the first green Marriott International's Hotel. This prototype hotel was designed and will be built with the help and cooperation of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The ultimate goal of Marriott International is to have a total of 300 Leadership in Energy and Design (LEED) hotels by the year 2015. The new hotel will be the first phase in the development of The Parks Berkley Community, a 5000 acre community. The Marriott is working in partnership with MeadWestvaco of Summerville, S.C., and Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial of Augusta, Ga. The new hotel is estimated to save $100,000, 25% in energy and water consumption, and 6 months worth of design time. It is due to open in earl 2012 and the Marriott is working with the USGBC and its suppliers, Philips Lighting and Kohler Company, to outfit the hotel with energy- and water-saving fixtures. The Marriot International plans to go green with its other hotel brands in the future. |
