If you are interested in something exotic without roughing it and being part of a special event that shows the pride of a people, then consider Merdeka Day this coming August 31 in Malaysia. 50 years ago Malaysia declared its independence (merdeka) from the United Kingdom and every year since has staged a huge celebration, with parades, cultural music and dances from all of Malaysia’s 13 states along with spontaneous dancing in the streets. Fireworks and light shows cap off the day’s festivities in and around Independence Square in Kuala Lumpur. Occurring during the month prior to Merdeka Day is the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival which is the a national sale that makes shopping in Malaysia an even bigger bargain opportunity than it usually is.A number of special events are also planned to mark Malaysia’s 50th anniversary of independence, so if you are considering a trip to this vibrant, fascinating country that often isn’t on most Americans travel lists but should be, stop by the Malaysia Tourism website. |
