On the heels of a dispute between Air Canada and 6800 flight attendants comes a new dispute, this time between the airline's pilots who live abroad and Canadian tax authorities. Pilots who live abroad are requesting that they only pay Canadian taxes on the portion of their income they earn while flying in Canadian space. This situation has become very complicated and is prompting Ottawa to revise the rules or come up with new ones in order to deal with this unique situation. There have been approximately 40 Air Canada pilots living abroad who have disputed their income tax assessments. Current tax laws on Canadians who live abroad are that they are only taxed on income they earn while performing duties in Canada. Pilots who live outside of Canada have been pushing the limit and have been battling with the CRA in court to determine what portions of what routes should be taxable. Mr. Justice Cameron McArthur of the Tax Court of Canada states that it might be time for the government to apply a flat percentage for airline pilots living abroad and have the situation done and over with.
