New Tarmac Rule Cuts Number of Delayed Flights
Thursday, 12 August 2010
With a new tarmac rule in place, airlines are now seeing a dramatic decrease in the number of flight delays they experience.

In the first full month the rule has been in place, May 2010, airlines experienced a mere 5 3-hour delays, which is down from the 34 delays experienced in May of last year.  Three of the delayed flights were United Airlines flights and they were all delayed on the same day due to severe thunder storms at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

While it was determined by the Department of Transportation that four delays were misreported and the airlines cancelled 1.2% of their flights, there is still a serious decrease in flight delays with the new tarmac rule.  In addition, the misreported delays were ones that did not actually violate the 3-hour time limit on delays, the time in which airlines have to ensure passengers are returned to the terminal if a flight is delayed.  This 3-hour time limit is part of the new rules and airlines face the possibility of severe fines if they do not comply with it.
