Possible 2009 Air Fare Drop
Tuesday, 07 October 2008
Southwest airlines Southwest Airlines recently released their schedule and fares for early 2009, and industry experts believe that it could inspire rival airlines to to lower their own fares in response. The announcement was an unusual move for Southwest, who usually only take reservation six months in advance, as opposed to other airlines which book as far as a year out.

The new schedule, covering Jan. 9 through March 6, challenged other airlines to roll back prices that they had set to match Southwest’s on many routes. What this means for consumers is lower prices through March, then possible increases afterward.

Southwest also announced this week that they would begin service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) in March, with flights to Chicago Midway. “Minneapolis-St. Paul's geographic location complements the vast Southwest Airlines network really well,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest's Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO in a release. “We have studied and been interested in serving this very popular market for quite some time, and we look forward to bringing our low fares and legendary Customer Service to the people of Minnesota.” So a little bit of LUV for the Twin Cities.
