Lovers of Rum Love Barbados The “sociable rum culture” of Barbados makes it an ideal vacation spot for those who like a little tipple with their travels, according to a travel piece published by the McClatchy-Tribune News Service called “If you're a rum drinker, Barbados is the promised land”.

Along with perfect white beaches, bright blue seas and tropical sun, Barbados’ “rum shops” are the equivalent of Ireland’s pubs and Spain’s tapas bars – the small island boasts over 1,200 rum shops, where locals gather to swap stories, sip rum, and catch up on each others’ lives.

Writer Jody Kurash visited the Mount Gay Visitor's Center to take a tour and taste the product. “During the tasting, we learn to distinguish the differences in flavor during the various stages of the rum-making process,” Kurash wrote. “Single distillate has a potent smack and aroma while the double distillate exults a deeper and more robust character. We can detect the oak and vanilla hints that come from the aging rum in the oak barrels.”

Of course, there’s more to do in Barbados besides drink rum. There’s scuba diving and snorkeling among the coral reefs, high-end hotels with spas and gold courses, and world-class restaurants.
