Royal Caribbean Cracks Down On So-called Agents
Thursday, 15 November 2007
Cruise Ship The American Association of Travel Agents (ASTA) recently announced their approval of Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd.’s (RCCL) announcement that they would no longer do business with so-called “card-mills,” businesses that provide travel-agent credentials to individuals, purely so that they can take advantage of industry discounts.

RCCL said that its associated brands – Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises – will terminate all relationships with card mills. In a letter sent to ASTA, Royal Caribbean executives said that the “announcement is good news to legitimate travel sellers whose businesses depend upon consumer trust and to consumers who look to their travel agent for expert and professional service.”

ASTA, which has been engaged in a long-running fight against card mills, stating that the operations damage the reputation of the travel industry, has also taken the step of providing information about card mills for consumers on its website. The white paper, titled “What Consumers and Consumer Protection Agencies Should Know About Travel Industry Card Mills,” can be downloaded at http://www.travelsense.org/consumer/cardmills.pdf .
