DOT Ruling A Victory for Oxygen Patients
| DOT Ruling A Victory for Oxygen Patients |
| Monday, 12 May 2008 | |||||||
Airlines now will have to allow passengers the ability to carry on approved portable oxygen concentrators when they board because of an amendment of the Air Carrier Access Act by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
According to the American Association for Respiratory Care, a professional association of respiratory therapists, this is an important step for patients suffering from respiratory illnesses who require supplemental oxygen. The Air Carrier Access Act did not specifically address the needs of medical oxygen users previously but did require U.S. air carriers to accommodate the needs of passengers with disabilities. The new amendment stipulates passenger-owned electronic equipment that assists breathing, such as portable oxygen concentrators, must be allowed on board. The new ruling applies to all U.S. airlines worldwide as well as foreign airlines whose flights begin or end in the United States. The ruling is not set to take effect officially for one year, therefore providing the airlines with enough time to implement it.
