Getting Ready For 2010 Olympics
Monday, 13 October 2008

Vancouver 2010 logo If the Beijing summer games have yet to quench your need for Olympic gold, you may already be thinking about the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. And now is the time to start planning – the lottery for ticket orders kicked off on Oct. 3.

Most events are pretty affordable, priced under $100, with over 100,000 tickets going for just $25. This includes many of the more popular events, like luge, bobsled, giant slalom and speed skating. And even the cheap seats should have a pretty good view – Vancouver’s biggest competition venue, Canada Hockey Place, seats around 18,000 people. You can get tickets through two authorized sources: Jet Set Sports (jetsetsports.com) and CoSport (cosport.com).

As with all Olympic Games, if you plan to fly, you should book early. Tickets will go on sale in February, a year in advance of the games. If you intend to fly/drive or drive directly to Vancouver, expect delays at the border and restrictions in town when you try to use your car. Amtrak’s Seattle-Vancouver route takes about four hours, and costs between $60 and $92 round trip.

Lodging is plentiful in Vancouver, with about 24,000 hotel rooms, but again, book early, Many hotels will start taking reservations when the first round of tickets goes on sale. There are also a variety of inns, B&Bs, hotels and apartments for rent in neighboring suburbs like Burnaby, Horseshoe Bay or Richmond, which are all convenient to Olympic venues.

Expect changes in Canada-U.S. border crossing rules between now and the games, and be prepared with lots of paperwork. Or apply now for a new passport card, which costs $45. You can find all the information you need at the Department of State website (travel.state.gov).
