Will Fidel's Resignation Open Cuba?
| Will Fidel's Resignation Open Cuba? |

The tourism industry has had its eye on Cuba as a possible U.S. vacation destination for some time, awaiting the day when the government-imposed travel restrictions are loosened. And with Fidel Castro’s announcement that he would be stepping down as Cuba’s leader, there are renewed hopes that tourism will soon follow suit.Experts say that it may happen, but that it’ll take awhile. The U.S. first has to lift its embargo. Then Cuban tourism – which is the country’s number one industry – has to adapt to American business needs. Understandably, Cuba’s close proximity to Florida and its intriguing mix of cultures has hotel chains and cruise lines salivating. The island attracted 2.1 million visitors last year, mostly Europeans and Canadians. Cuba currently boasts around 70,000 hotel rooms, the newest having been build by European chains. Bringing U.S. tourism to the country would involve a lot of coordination between U.S. airlines, cruise companies and hotel chains, but it may be on the way. Industry experts believe that the regime change will very likely lead to a new U.S. policy toward Cuba.
