Observing The 60th Anniversary Of The Berlin Airlift
Saturday, 05 September 2009
American Airpower Museum This coming Labour Day Weekend, from September 4-7, the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift will be recognized. The Berlin Airlift was a significant event during the cold war when Allied forces airlifted large amounts of food to a city that had been isolated by Soviet forces. The highlight of the celebrations will be the arrival of the C-54 transport plane at the American Airpower Museum of the Republic Airport. This aircraft was the plane that delivered the food and saved the people of Berlin from starvation.

President and founder of the museum, Jeff Clyman, says that the Soviets thought they could conquer West Berlin by simply shutting down all road and rail service to the city and underestimated the American and British commitment to bring in food by air. Ceremonies to welcome the plane to the museum will be held on Friday, September 3 and will include an address by German diplomat Vice Consul Werner-Ciprian Fugel.
