According to the Washington Post:

United Airlines will become the first U.S. carrier to stop serving free meals and snacks in the coach cabin of some overseas flights as it tries to stem losses from record fuel prices.

United will charge $6 for snack boxes that include cheese, crackers, fruit, yogurt and a pastry, and $9 for salads and sandwiches.

I know, this is going to be rough for traveling especial if they are still not letting us take food in our bags with us. Sigh, long trips will be more expensive then.

Well the good thing is that you can still take food with you on the plane, so you can bring whatever you need for yourself. You can even bring liquids into the plane, as long as they are purchased after the security check points. Of course the same can of Coke, for example will cost you 4 times more than if you buy it at the supermarket, but you can count that as an expense that will still be cheaper than buying their food.

I'm surprised that airlines are charging for food. I think the price of a decent meal in airline terms could still be "hidden" in the overall ticket price.

I enjoy eating on planes because it helps break up the monotony of the trip.

I can see business travel dropping to almost nothing, especially since meetings can be held online for less money.

Do you think airline's charges for meals will really help them out? I can foresee a time coming where people will not be willing to pay for meals unless they are on transatlantic flights!

I don't really think that would make much of a difference, because any meal I've seen on an airline hasn't been worth a significant portion of the cost of the flight... Although I've never flown first class.
