My friends rented a Van, because it was the cheapest on the lot, since it is considered to consume a lot of gas. Turned out that it was cheaper to rent the van and pay for gas, than to rent to subcompact.

Some bigger agencies now rent hybrids - it depends on where you are renting from. In LA, San Diego etc. you can reserve a hybrid. I have heard good things about the Prius. Next time you book, search through the available vehicles for the hybrid category.

I was offered a Prius once as a rental, I jumped on the chance to drive it. It was an interesting experience, when in slow traffic on a freeway, the electric engine kicked in and it was so amazingly smooth and quiet until I had to hit the gas when traffic picked up.

I am so looking forward to drive the prius! I am totally into the hybrid technology. I wish I could afford it right now! But I guess in the future I'll be able to do so.
