I was told that if you decide to book a room off the strip in Vegas, you can get some really great deals. What exactly is "off the strip?" Is it cheesy hotel/motel rooms that haven't had a good scrubbing in over 20 years and there's shoot-em ups directly across the street?

Actually, there are some very nice hotels "off the strip" like the Hard Rock Hotel and Planet Hollywood.

There are of course cheesy places to avoid, but there are some really nice hi-end resorts that do not have casinos as well.

Several years ago, we stayed at a very nice hotel that was just off of the strip, like around the corner from that boulevard. It wasn't very far from the strip, though.

I recall that we got a good deal. I think the name of the property was the San Remo.

We've stayed in downtown Las Vegas before and we liked it.

I'd say that you could hit more casinos and shops, etc with less walking if you stayed downtown, at least when we were there.

Do you have a price range as to what these hotels might cost? The last time we were in Vegas, we stayed at The Flamingo.

I want to say that we payed around 100 per night and it had a separate living and sleeping area.. and a fridge. It was pretty far off the strip.. it wasn't a Days Inn, but it was about that same quality.

How far off the strip were you, zmma? And what was the name of the hotel? Did you have to use a taxi for everywhere you wanted to go? I know they have buses on the Strip, but do they go off the Strip?
