I have just heard that a family member is very ill. A friend who lost her father was telling me about bereavement airline tickets/fares but this was several years ago. Is this still done? If I had a bereavement, are there discounts and/or short-notice provisions? My husband and I would be flying from either Eugene OR to LA, or depending upon ticket price Portland to LA.Thanks.

Bereavement fares still do exist. Each airline has its own policy many of which require proof of sickness/death by a physician statement.

Its best to find which airlines fly the route you are looking for and contact them directly.

Many times the bereavement fares that are offered are no better then you can get on a discount web site due to the current financial state of the carriers.

Thanks,Cat. I had no idea that I'd need a proof of sickness/death statement, so I am going to obtain that and hope I never have to use it.

I had no idea that they even offered bereavement fares. It is good to know this just in case so you can check the fares.

My father died suddenly while I was away at college and my grandmother purchased "Bereavement fare" tickets for me. The airline gave her a whopping $25.00 discount. She would have saved a lot more if all the internet tools we have available today were around back then.
