Sea sickness? - 2008/05/04 10:24 I've been lucky on the cruises I've taken. I've never been sea sick. But a friend of mine who wants to cruise is afraid to do so because she's afraid she'll be sick and miserable for the whole trip. Does anyone have any sea sickness remedies I can tell her about?

Re:Sea sickness? - 2008/05/05 10:05 There is patch that you wear kind of like a stop smoking remedy. It worked really well for me and my friends on our last cruise.

I believe that this is the one we used, it's by Novartis and is called "The Travel Patch".

Re:Sea sickness? - 2008/05/05 11:54 There are a number of prescription medications available now that she may wish to discuss with her doctor.

Not too long ago there was a Mythbusters episode trying out many so-called sea sickness cures. I learned 2 things from that show. 1) Some people really are much more sensitive to motion sickness than others and 2) ginger worked almost as well as over-the-counter meds for motion sickness.

Some tips in planning cruises for the easily seasick.
-Stay away from hurricane seasons wherever you are planning to cruise. Places that don't usually have storms during cruise season are the west coast of Mexico, Alaska, the Mediterranean and Hawaii.
- Select cabins lower and closer to the middle on the ship. This minimizes movement.
-If you tend to be motion sick in a car and find that looking out at the horizon helps calm your stomach, a cabin with a window may help. Otherwise, if looking AT the ocean turns your stomach, try an inside cabin.

Hope this helps.

Re:Sea sickness? - 2008/05/07 08:43 I haven't been in a cruise in a very very long time. But when I went, I was misserable the first hour, when I discovered that I was seasick. The rest of the 14 days, I was taking Dramamine every 6 hours, and I had a blast! Back then, there were no patches. Seasickness is not something to be afraid of if you have the right remedy for it.

Re:Sea sickness? - 2008/05/07 20:07 Thanks for the good advice. I'll pass it along to my friend. I'm trying to convince her to go on a cruise with me, so hopefully this will be the persuasion she needs!
