When it comes to flying, passengers feel there is more danger to their health before they board the aircraft. According to the most recent NPR-Thomson Reuters Health Poll more passengers are concerned about their health when going through security than are concerned about their health in the air. A mere 8% of those surveyed had any health concerns at all about traveling by air and the largest percentage of those people cited a plane crash as their biggest concernr. When it comes to going through security 23% of passengers surveyed said that they were concerned about radiation exposure. The same number of people said that they would refuse to go through the full-body scanners that are now being used in many of the nation's airports. Chief medical officer for the health care unit of Thomson Reuters, Dr. Ray Fabius, said that the health risk from going through the scanners is extremely low and that there is a greater risk of catching a communicable disease or developing a blood clot while flying.
