The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the use of iPads for pilots as a replacement for the hundreds of pages of flight manuals that they must have with them at all times. However, these iPads must be used during all stages of the flight, including take-off and landing, times when passengers are required to turn off their own electronic devices. Is this a double standard? Some think so. The rules governing the use of electronic equipment are outdated according to some people. The iPads the pilots are using have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they do not pose a threat to the operation of the aircraft, yet no such testing has been done on the electronic equipment used by the passengers. However, Les Dorr, spokesperson for the FAA, says that they would prefer to err on the side of caution with regards to electronics. The FAA also said that pilots are limited to two iPads, one each, and that two is a very different thing than potentially hundreds that could be used by passengers.
