Qantas Airways made a drastic and bold move over the weekend by grounding all of its flights, in an attempt to force the government to intervene in the labor disputes that have been plaguing the airline for the past few weeks. On Saturday, the airline grounded all flights, incomveniencing more than 70,000 passengers. As a result of the airline's actions, the Australia labour tribunal has stepped in, ordering the airline to resume operations and banning further strike action by the trade union. In addition, the tribunal has given the two sides 21 days to come to an agreement, at which time they will have to submit to binding arbitration if one has not been forthcoming. Ron McCallum, professor of industrial law at Sydney University, says that binding arbitration will very likely give Qantas the win in this dispute.
