 This summer, the kids aren’t the only ones who can go to camp. “Fantasy camps” for grown-ups are booming, offering adults the chance to live out their dreams as a rock star, astronaut, gourmet chef or race-car driver at specialized learning programs across the country and around the world. These types of trips often bring specialized experiences to enhance a trip to a particular destination.
In fact, Peg L. Smith, chief executive officer of The American Camp Association (ACA) told Travel & Leisure that “many adults find a camp vacation to be more rewarding than a week at a resort,” with participants spending a week in wine country learning how to make Pinot Noir or traveling to Atlantic City to learn poker from the experts (one “Poker Boot Camp” graduate, Lee Childs, took what he learned to the World Series of Poker and made it to the finals.) Among Travel & Leisure’s top picks: Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp, where you can trade licks with rockers like Joe Walsh and Roger Daltrey ($2,000 to $12,000). Space Camp, where you’ll simulate astronaut training in a virtual space station ($449 to $1,299). Gondolier Training in Venice, where you get a three-hour crash course in gondola steerage ($550 per session, up to five people). Gladiator Training in Rome, with experts teaching you the finer points of combat while wearing a tunic and sandals ($760 per person).
