Anna Thanks for the great info!
angusboy The most expensive prices for airline ticketsare at the 21 and 14 days prior to departure point. Unless something unusual like an earthquake or other natural disaster causes a major drop off in tourism, as flight dates approach, prices generally do go up.

Airline tickets originating in the U.S. have three general price periods: 1) low - mid-November to mid February excluding the holidays 2) shoulder - mid-February to mid-June and then mid-September and 3) high - mid-June to mid-September. The closer you get to high season, the more prices will creep up.

If you have seen a pattern of rising prices on the route and dates you are considering, then it's time to make a decision and do some serious shopping. Try mid-week departures and returns, if you have a choice of airports, choose the one with the most international connections because that airport will be more competitive and look for late or early morning departures that will be less popular. If you are not near a major gateway airport, such as Chicago, L.A. or New York, consider flying with a regional carrier to one of those major airports. The difference in price from a major airport can be significant. Just be sure to give yourself plenty of connection time at that airport, since you don't want to miss your flight to Africa!
