Small aircraft, the ones that provide service between the small cities in the US are slowly being phased out. These aircraft are less fuel-efficient than their larger counterparts and, as such, are not practical considering the high cost of fuel. United Continental, Delta, and other major airlines are taking steps to rid their fleets of these small aircraft, the ones with 50 seats or fewer. The aircraft will be parked or sold for scrap metal. In light of this, small airports are losing the business of the larger airlines and Airports Council International says that there will be more closures in the future. The loss of these small aircraft means that those people who want to fly will need to drive, bus, or take the train to the larger cities in order to access the larger airports. This naturally creates problems for those who need to travel for business and those who wish to travel for pleasure. See the original Google News article for more details. |
