Solar Storm Disrupts Air Canada Flights
Thursday, 26 January 2012
A huge solar storm sent radiation hurling into the earth's atmosphere on Tuesday evening, forcing Air Canada to reroute some of its northern flights. The solar storm was the biggest in nearly ten years and Air Canada rerouted its Arctic flights, including those headed for Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. Peter Fitzpatrick, spokesperson for Air Canada, said that the decision to reroute the flights was taken as a safety precaution.

The new flight path added a little extra time to the flights as the aircraft did not fly further north than 70 degrees. However, on Wednesday radiation levels dropped and flights got back to normal. Delta Airlines also rerouted a number of flights. The concern with the high radiation levels is that they can interfere with radio transmissions. Delta will monitor radiation levels and solar activity before returning their routes to normal.
