State Department Warns Against Travel To Kingston, Jamaica
Wednesday, 26 May 2010
Travel to Kingston, Jamaica and the surrounding communities is currently unsafe and the U.S. State Department warns travelers to stay away from this popular travel destination. There is currently a state of emergency declared for Kingston and St. Andrew and the increasing violence and gun fights are due to the efforts of the Jamaican Defence Forces to arrest an alleged weapons and drug trafficker.

The Norman Manley International Airport is open intermittently, but many international flights in and out of the airport have been cancelled. U.S. citizens in Jamaica are warned to stay inside their homes or hotels and listen to radio reports before venturing out. They should also check with their airline before going to the airport and when traveling to the airport they should use the South Camp Road. All U.S. citizens should keep a low profile while in Jamaica. The travel alert remains in effect until June 23, 2010.
