Tips For Avoiding Identity Theft During Business Travel
Friday, 06 August 2010
One of the greatest fears for everyone these days is the possibility of identity theft and for the business traveler, who often travels frequently, this is an even bigger concern. Fortunately, there are some steps that business travelers can take to protect themselves while they are traveling.

Always carry personal documents in your carry-on luggage where you can keep track of them and carry only the documents you must have, leaving everything else, such as documents with your social security number, at home. Never carry more than two credit cards, the second one to be used as a backup, and never carry a debit card. If a thief gets ahold of this your bank account will very likely be emptied immediately.

When checking bank or credit information online, be sure to do so from a secure connection and be sure to check at least once during your trip so you can see if any funds are missing from your account. Wi-Fi hotspots and internet cafes are generally not secure. Skimming is a common practice, which happens when a copy of the magnetic strip is made when paying at a restaurant or bar and then a counterfeit card can be made and used. Other tips include not publicizing details of your travel plans on social networking sites and be sure to use the hotel.
