United Airlines will become the first U.S. airline to use advanced biofuels in flight as it departs from Houston Bush Intercontinental at 10:30 am local time, bound for Chicago O'Hare. Pete McDonald, United COO, said that the airline is taking a big step toward the regular use of environmentally-friendly biofuels. In addition, Alaska Air announced that both it and its sister company, Horizon Air, will be using a biofuel blend in 75 of their U.S. flights this year, the first of which will happen on Wednesday. These will be select flights between Seattle and Washington and Seattle and Portland and they will be using a 20% biofuel blend. Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by an estimated 10%.
