Currently, it is mandatory for airline passenger lists to be screened for potential terrorists and now the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering doing the same for cruise ship passenger lists. The recommendation was made on Monday by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), who stated that cruise ships are the single largest method of transportation, large ships carrying as many as 8500 passengers. Even the coast guard considers cruise ships as desirable targets for terrorists and terrorists have been onboard cruise ships or have targeted them in the past. The coast guard is responsible for the security of cruise ships and often acts as an escort for a cruise ship when it is entering port. As yet, the DHS does not consider cruise ships at risk and issued a report stating that in 2010 there were no terrorist threats to cruise ships. There have been measures put into practice to ensure the safety of cruise ships, but more could be done according to the GAO. |
